The Digital Divide

White digital printing on Classic Crest Epic Black

Well the line between offset and digital printing continues to blur. Don’t get me wrong, there is still something very satisfying about an awesome 5-color job with all kinds of wonderful finishing touches but, what I saw today was very exciting. We printed our first project on Classic Crest Epic Black using a white digital toner tray. Just white on black. Digital. And let me tell you folks — it was smoking hot. White hot even.

Thanks to Mickey at Capital Printing for a great job on the project and Judy at OK Paper for turning us on to this.

A tribute to a great client

Yesterday I attended the memorial of client and friend Ursula Talley. As I was listening to the wonderful words and memories about her, it stuck me that her honesty, drive, kindness and loyalty were apparent to everyone who knew her. She had a distinctive personal brand and lived it every second of her life for every person in her life. She powered her work and her life by the same basic principles of being true to yourself, true to your brand in every interaction. As the VP of Marketing for StoredIQ it was her dedication to the brand that made the company and Ursula a respected player in the marketplace. No one could spot the slightest shift in PMS color value within the logo better than her. She managed the brand like a mother fusses over her children. She cared.

In many ways she was the most wonderful and maddening client I’ve had the opportunity to work with. She was fiercely loyal (we followed her through two marketing stints at two different companies), fair, demanding and rewarding. She was the first to tell you if something we did for her was less than inspired: “Jason, I just don’t get this.” And just as quick to say, “I absolutely love this!” She was comfortable calling bullshit on me and always expected me to do the same. I can recall going back and forth on an ad (or maybe several) changing the smallest details together. With Ursula it wasn’t about being right (well, sometimes it was) but, it was always about making it perfect.

She trusted us to deliver our best product and as a result we wanted to give her our best. Ursula had the capacity to bring the best out of all of us and made us want to be great – not just for her, for ourselves.

What’s Better Than Good? Barbeque.

To celebrate the introduction of their “Better Than Good” BBQ Sauce Cookwell & Company invited their top partners and customers on a tour of some of the best barbeque joints in the Austin area. Did we drool on our desks while designing the guidebook for the tour? Yes, we did.

Candy Dish: A nice e-commerce confirmation screen

This is the first of our “Candy Dish” posts: our way of sharing some eye candy that we found interesting or inspirational. Earlier this week I purchased Transmit 4 FTP software from panic.com, and I was struck by the simplicity and elegance of their order confirmation screen. Check it out – it’s clean, simple and very nicely done. The typography is great, and I really like the receipt-y details of the content area. But I really appreciate the fact that it’s straightforward and instructive. There’s giving me only the information I need, and they’re not immediately trying to cross-sell/up-sell me. Instead, they seem to genuinely appreciate my $29.99.

How the Clutch: ChartSwap

Requisition forms, faxes, copies, certified mail, phone calls. What do these things have in common? They’re all part of the process of requesting medical records. Seems like their ought to be a better way, right? That’s what the folks at ChartSwap thought too, and that’s why they’ve created a secure online platform where provider can exchange records with third party requestors. Here’s a peak into the process and early iterations of creating their corporate identity.

design with purpose

This past summer The Loving Libbie Foundation approached us to create the identity and poster for their first ever Libbie’s Birthday Bash and Macaroni Fun Run benefiting the Children’s Blood and Cancer Center at Dell Children’s Hospital. Together with Bountiful Bakery, the Loving Libbie Foundation provides homemade mac and cheese to kids in cancer treatment at the hospital. We were honored to help such a wonderful cause and honor the memory of a very special little girl.

The Ultimate Austin Scavenger Race

Our friends at Cookwell & Company love good food, and they love having a good time. So, when they invited HEB supermarket chefs from all over Texas to visit Austin, they wanted to create a fun experience that would give their guests a better understanding of the Cookwell & Company brand – and Cookwell’s hometown. The “Ultimate Austin Scavenger Race” was a day-long contest between two teams of chefs. We had a great time designing the game cards, and the chefs had a great time exploring Austin.

We make learning delicious

To celebrate the first day of school (Really? Celebrate? Yeah, believe me – parents are celebrating.) we present some fun word problems we created as part of a Back to School campaign for our friends at Texadelphia. It’s like a school on Saturday…no class! (Apologies to Fat Albert.)
